In many situations, dental implants can give patients their confident smile back. The benefits are improved esthetics, the ability to eat comfortably and a clean, healthy oral environment for the patient.
Dental Implants are small prosthetic posts that are placed into the bone of the upper or lower jaw. They act as replacements for the root portion of lost natural teeth and also serve as an anchor for replacement teeth. Dental implants look and feel exactly like natural teeth — in fact, no one other than you and your doctor will be able to tell the difference. Dental implants are appropriate for almost anyone who is currently missing teeth or is at risk of losing teeth.
There are many different types of dental implants available. Drs. Lagner and Kozlowski have extensive experience in dental implants and would be pleased to discuss the benefits of implant prosthetics with you. Ask about implant restorative treatment at the time of your consultation.
CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) is a multi-instrument system that allows dentists to create and implant custom-fit ceramic restorations in a single appointment. The system consists of an infrared digital camera, a computer with 3-D imaging software, and a milling unit with diamond blades for quick, precise and highly detailed construction of restorations.
The CEREC system can produce any permanent, single-tooth ceramic restoration, including crowns, onlays, veneers and fillings. Unlike metals and alloys, ceramic is similar to the natural tooth, so cracking is minimized because the material expands and contracts at about the same rate as the tooth during temperature changes while eating. In addition, CEREC offers benefits over traditional restoration construction such as fewer injections, less drilling, less material removed from the damaged tooth, and minimal time commitment.
The process is simple. First, the dentist examines your tooth and determines the proper treatment. After application of anesthesia, the damaged part of the tooth is removed and an optical impression (digital photograph) is taken. The computer converts this data into a three-dimensional virtual image that allows the dentist to design the restoration that's right for you. Dimensions of the restoration are sent to the milling machine, which shapes a ceramic block to create the restoration in 10-20 minutes. Finally, the restoration is fit into your mouth, polished and bonded to your tooth.
Dentures are prosthetic devices designed to help patients with missing teeth perform daily activities that would otherwise be difficult. Patients who have lost their natural teeth due to decay, periodontal disease or injury may suffer from further decay, and difficulty eating and speaking. The absence of teeth can also lead to a sunken, collapsed appearance in the mouth area. By restoring the physical presence of teeth, this malformation is corrected and the patient can maintain their normal appearance.
There are three types of dentures: full (complete) dentures, fixed partial dentures and removable partial dentures. Most patients only require partial dentures, as they are only missing a few teeth. Additionally, most partial dentures are fixed in place by the crown-and-bridge technique, and those who possess removable partial dentures are usually exempt from the fixed version due to complicating factors.
When considering having dentures made, a denturist or prosthodontist is generally recommended over a dentist, with the exception of those dentists who are exceptionally experienced and detailed. Maxillary (top teeth) dentures tend to achieve better unification with the toothless gums due to the improvement in suction from the smooth surface. However, mandibular (bottom teeth) dentures are much more effective if the patient still retains some teeth.
Bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth, but often rely on surrounding healthy teeth for support. This causes damage to healthy teeth and may lead to future tooth loss.
Implant bridges provide strong, natural-looking replacements but rely on implants in the jawbone for each missing tooth. The crowns for each tooth are connected to form one piece. The implants provide the comfort and support of a traditional bridge without any damaging side effects. Implant bridges offer a stronger permanent solution to restore your natural smile and make missing teeth a worry of the past.
Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth with strong and durable materials that enhance your smile, health and confidence. Implants are a permanent solution to replace missing teeth and can be used in conjunction with other procedures, such as crowns, to restore a happy and healthy smile.
Tooth loss is often a result of tooth decay, gum disease, trauma or congenital effects. Missing teeth can cause low self-esteem, eating problems, speech problems and further tooth damage.
Dental implant crowns often look and feel like natural teeth and are fused to the bone to provide stability. In fact, they may be indistinguishable from natural teeth to others. The use of porcelain crowns creates a smooth, metal-free appearance that fits in seamlessly with your other teeth.
While dentures and bridges also used to replace missing teeth, implants have many benefits over these procedures. Dentures may slip from the gums or click while talking or eating, and bridges use adjacent teeth as an anchor. Some of the benefits of implant crowns include:
